Server virtualisation allows IT departments to deliver more with less when provisioning server resources for the organisation. By masking the physical server resources such as CPU, memory and storage, server administrators can divide a physical server into multiple isolated environments that can be used to run traditional Windows (and other) operating systems.

Using this model each virtual machine is presented to the guest operating system as an independent platform, this approach allows the guest OS to run without modifications. The guest OS has no knowledge it is running within a virtualised environment and sharing the physical resources of the host system.
